Duffy String Band History
The Duffy String Band was founded in 1945 by Fire Captain George E. Duffy and, at the time, was called the “Firefighter’s String Band,” as its membership was largely comprised of Philadelphia Firefighters. Some years later, the band was renamed “Duffy String Band” in honor of its founder.
In 1956, the band was purchased by Henry J. Kunzig, Sr. (photo at right). A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, Henry was born in Fishtown, studied engineering at Drexel University, and served as a submarine engineer during World War II. After his time in the Navy, Henry worked at Cramp Shipyard and, along with his father, at Marine Electrical Co. However, most of Henry’s career was spend as an engineer aboard the tugboats operated by McAllister Towing.
When he purchased the band, it was Henry’s plan to make his son, Robert, Captain. Sadly, Bobby developed leukemia and died at age 21. So Seaman Kunzig named himself Captain and continued in his roles as Captain and Owner of Duffy String Band until his retirement from active participation in the parade in 1985.
That year, Henry’s son, Ted Kudrick, was named Captain, a position which he holds to this day. Henry continued to manage the day-to-day affairs of the band from Duffy’s clubhouse in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. Henry thrived on the responsibility and he continued to live and breathe Mummery and its traditions until his death in December 1996. On June 12, 2005, Henry was post-humously awarded the Legion of Honor Bronze Medallion by the Chapel of Four Chaplains aboard the USS John W. Brown for his humanitarian contributions to his fellow seamen, Mummers and community.
Duffy String Band proudly continues on in honor of Henry’s memory with his son, Ted Kudrick, and two daughters, Peg Rullo and Cheryl Crowe, continuing to operate the band. In addition, much of Henry's immediate family are members of the band - including son Michael Kudrick, daughter-in-law Colleen Kudrick, sons-in-law Charlie Kochensky (President) and Joe Rullo (Music Director), and grandchildren Sharon Fetscher (Drill Director), Tricia Crowe, Chrissie Kudrick, Allyn Rullo, Joey Rullo and newest member Henry "Jake" Kudrick. |

Duffy String Band has long been known as a teaching band. The band enjoys a long-standing and well-deserved reputation as a band that is willing to take on beginners and introduce them to the tradition of Mummery. The Duffy String Band has a mixed group of members consisting of men and women, young and old.
As a family-run organization, the band has always promoted family participation. Parents and family members are urged to take on an active role ... whether it is as marshals, assisting the band on parades and concerts or working behind the scenes, helping to build props and backpieces and assisting with the maintenance of the band's clubhouse.
The band makes its home at its clubhouse at 2230 Cedar Street in Fishtown and has enjoyed the support of that neighborhood for many years.
All three of Duffy String Band's longtime Captains, George E. Duffy, Henry J. Kunzig, Sr. and Teddy Kudrick, are members of the String Band Association's prestigious "Hall of Fame." In 2007, the band's current president, Charlie Kochensky, was also inducted.
Over the past few years, Duffy String Band has expanded in the form of new members residing at the Jersey Shore and now proudly promotes what is referred to as “Duffy String Band South.” In 2003, the band was named the “Official String Band of North Wildwood, New Jersey” by former Mayor Aldo A. Palombo. Duffy String Band is featured in all North Wildwood parades, and strolls the boardwalk every Wednesday night during the summer entertaining the town's residents and tourists.
Duffy String Band celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2005, with the recording of their anniversary CD, "60 Years of Music and Mummery". See "Mummerabilia" page to get your copy! |
